Teaching Translation for Teachers of A-level
When: Wednesday, 18th April 2018 14.00-17.00
What: Translation: Theory and Practice for A-Level teachers (Chinese, French, German and Spanish)
This workshop brings together translators and teachers for an intensive afternoon of conceptual theories followed by hands-on translation practice. An introduction to the latest translation theories will give the background on how to teach translation to your students. This will then be followed up with workshops in translation to and from English, Chinese, French, German and Spanish.
For the language-specific workshops, groups work on a collaborative translation with the workshop leader. One of the aspects we will explore is difficulties of translation inherent to different languages and how to overcome them. For example, while the English phrase ‘to be like a bull in a china shop’ is nearly the same in German, the animal is different (an elephant in this case). How can we teach students idiomatic language, how make them aware of synonyms? How can we teach translation to students?
All language specific workshops are designed to encourage collaboration and peer learning in a small group setting.
The event is free for teachers, but registration is required via Eventbrite.
